Misapplying exponent subtraction and sign rules

The student consistently mishandles the quotient rule for exponents and sign cancellation. In the multi-term rational-expression simplification involving a polynomial numerator divided by a monomial denominator, the last term was treated as multiplication by y instead of division, revealing a failure to produce a negative exponent. In single-term divisions such as (2/3)z⁵ ÷ (4/9)z² and (3/5)a⁴ ÷ (1/5)a², the original exponent was retained and the coefficient was mis-computed, indicating a broader difficulty with exponent subtraction and coefficient division.

Understand Why

Reveal the missing prerequisite or instructional barrier behind every learning struggle.

💡WHY IT'S HAPPENING

The student is missing procedural fluency with the quotient rule: subtracting exponents, especially when the result should be a negative exponent that must be expressed in the denominator. They also do not consistently apply sign rules for division of negative monomials and rational coefficients, leading to sign errors and incorrect coefficient calculations.

PRACTICE FOCUS AREAS
  1. Exponent subtraction for like bases
  2. Handling negative exponents in simplified form
  3. Sign rules for division of negative monomials
